PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Trent Rockets are on a roll as they have won three games in a row. Manchester Super Giants, meanwhile, have stuttered slightly with two successive losses after winning their first two games. Join us tomorrow for more fast-paced action from the Hundred. Until next time, goodbye and cheers...
Billings (3/3): (On taking on Sunrisers Leeds at home on Sunday after three wins a row) They had a brilliant win against Manchester at Leeds the other day. Mitch Marsh smacked it. So, again, another good team. I think that's the brilliant thing about this competition this year, is that every team you come up against, you know you have to be right on it. Everyone's beating everyone. But if we can get three wins in five days, it really puts us in a nice position. It's up to us to create that energy and bring that on Sunday. (On having bowling options for different conditions) Exactly. I think a lot of these tournaments, certainly in the shorter format, personally as a captain, I like having that sixth bowling option. It is so tough on different grounds to just go in with five bowlers. So Calvin has been exceptional. He wasn't required today against one of the best players in the world in Jos. It's just a feeling that, like you said, Lewis Gregory's experience and the ability to bowl in different phases of the game is definitely nice to have as captain.
Billings (2/2): (On timing the ball well from the outset) It's nice. Obviously, a terrible shot to get out. But that's a certainty in this format of the game. I think it's so key to get those partnerships going, and you can feed off one another. But he (Allen) was brilliant tonight to score at over a 200 strike rate on a wicket like that. They're not small boundaries here by any stretch as well. So, quality knock from a quality player. (On Craig Overton) He's got the nickname Beefy at the moment. He's a great guy. He's done it with the new ball consistently and just hits that length, especially on a wicket like that that offers a little bit. He is just so good. And some key wickets today. You've got to be brave with some of your fields against a quality top order like these guys. So to get that wicket, I thought that was a massive moment in the game. (On whether he intends to use Overton exclusively up top?) Exactly. I think the first couple of games we probably struggled to find our rhythm as a team. Matt Henry's brilliant with the new ball. Mohammad Amir we didn't use initially up the top. So it's trying to get all those guys into the game because they're such good bowlers with the new ball. But the last couple of games, just that relentlessness of length, really. I think all three of them are such different bowlers, and they've really fed off each other. Craig's been fantastic.
Sam Billings | Trent Rockets captain: (1/1) (On their bowlers once again setting the tone) It's always a difficult one when you're coming away. Some of the pitches are fresh, some of the pitches have been used a little bit. So if you're unsure, I think in this format it's best to hopefully restrict them to a decent score, which we did today. And I thought Finn Allen showed his class. Effortless power throughout, and he played a sensational knock. On a wicket like that, you needed someone to go big. (On the Rockets clicking as a unit and is there more to come?) I definitely think there's more to come. Probably our best player hasn't quite got it going at the moment, and that's a great sign for us as a team. He's arguably one of the best in the world in Tim David. It's a great place to be that other guys are taking the mantle on. Ben Duckett missed out today as well. I think he was the leading run-scorer. So the pleasing thing is that everyone's chipping in at different points. There's definitely more to come from us. (On captaining Finn Allen) He's a great guy. He's liking his golf at the moment, and he hits a cricket ball like a golf ball. Like we said, effortless power. I think what makes him such a good player is that at the start of his innings, he's actually playing really good cricketing shots. Then off the back foot, that's where he puts so many bowlers under pressure, both spin and pace, and that power down the ground. So, a brilliant player to watch from the other end.
Finn Allen | Match Hero: [Talk about batting on that surface] I think it was obviously tough at the start. I think they bowled well and challenged us. They've got a pretty impressive bowling lineup. So, just wanted to try and have a good foundation to start off with and then just absorb pressure where I could. [On getting used to the Hundred format] The first game was definitely a shock to the system. It goes pretty quickly. But it's just trying to look at it like every other game, start the same, and I guess have the same processes. [What happened with the injury?] Both my calves and hammy were going, old age is getting me. Everything's all good. [On the importance of topping the table] We talked about being on the road and how challenging it was going to be, and if we could get a few wins to go back home with, it would be really good for pushing our finals opportunities. I guess we're pretty happy with how we've gone on the road, and now we go back home for our next one on Sunday. [What's the challenge of going from these surfaces back to Trent Bridge?] I think it's just adapting to the surface. Everyone's kind of played different at the moment. I think we're going to use (pitch) one at Trent Bridge again. Just have to assess pretty quickly and hopefully carry on momentum.
21:14 Local Time, 20:14 GMT, 01:44 IST: Another fine all-round outing for the Rockets and they move to the top of the table with this convincing win. Buttler and du Plooy's 81-run stand did gave the Super Giants something to fight with but 137 was still slightly below-par on a spicy surface. In response, the in-form duo of Duckett and Banton fell inside the powerplay and that charged the hosts up. But, then Allen and Billings mixed caution with aggression to perfection. They not only stabilised the innings but also put their side in the driver's seat with their dominant 74-run stand. Allen in particular was at his destructive best and hit the ball all around the ground to notch up a 23-ball fifty. Billings and David fell in quick succession but by then, the game was almost done. Allen continued to bat with supreme confidence and along with Santner who played a nice little cameo, they took their side home with 13 balls to spare...
